Roy Y. Floyd, 80, a resident of East Wenatchee for the past ten years, and a former resident of Leavenworth and Cashmere, died Sunday, April 26, 2009, at his home in East Wenatchee, with his family by his side. Roy was born on February 18, 1929, to Richard B. and Sarah J. (Gossett) Floyd at Sever County, TN, where he was raised and educated. Around the age of 18, Roy moved to Detroit, where he went to work for a short time at the Chrysler Motor Corporation. He then moved back to Tennessee, where on November 6, 1952, he was inducted into the United States Army. Roy attended boot camp at Camp Roberts in California and served in Korea. On September 7, 1954, he was transferred to the Reserves and on November 16, 1960, he was honorably discharged. Roy was very patriotic and was proud of his service and his country. In 1954, he moved to Leavenworth, where he worked for Peshastin Lumber and Box Company and in 1957, Roy moved to Manson, where he worked in the woods, logging. On September 6, 1958, Roy married Myrtle Barnes at Dryden and in 1961, they moved to Cashmere. In 1966, Roy went to work for Alcoa, working in the pot rooms as a Head Tapper, retiring in 1991. In 1971, while still at Alcoa, Roy and Myrtle purchased and operated a small fruit orchard. In 1994, they sold the orchard and moved to Tennessee and in 1999, they moved to East Wenatchee, where they have lived ever since. Roy loved hunting and fishing and would travel all around the country hunting elk, moose, deer, turkey and whatever else might be in season at the time. He also enjoyed camping, RV'ing and traveling. His greatest love was for his grandchildren, joking and wrestling and always letting them have ice cream at any time. There were no real rules at grandpa's house when it came to them. Roy had a nickname for everyone; he also loved to play practical jokes and didn't even get upset when one returned the favor. His favorite saying was always "Cut up and act the fool."
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Floyd of the family home; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Mark McNett of Las Vegas, NV; son, Thomas Floyd of Spokane; grandchildren, Joshua Floyd and Alicia Floyd, both of Spokane; sister, Joy Price of Sevierville, TN; brother-in-law, Otto Rolen and his wife, Letha; and sisters-in-law, Mary Thomas, Ethel Harrell and Hazel Rolen; lots of nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Jim Shrable.
The family would like to extend a special thank you for all the love and support that brother-in-law, Otto Rolen and niece, Eunice Hannah, have given Roy in the past months.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at the Mt. View Cemetery in Leavenworth, at 11:00 a.m. and a Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Roy Floyd will be held at the Eastmont Baptist Church in East Wenatchee on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Steve Brewer officiating. Visitation will be held at Ward's Funeral Chapel on Thursday April 30, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastmont Baptist Church Building Fund at 330 N. Lyle, East Wenatchee, WA 98802 or to the Central Washington Hospital Hospice Fund at 933 Red Apple Road, Wenatchee, WA 98801. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
